The Mt. Lebanon Fire Department serves everyone living, working and visiting Mt. Lebanon by preventing as many emergencies as possible and responding to all hazards, fires and rescues.
We are a combination department with 18 career officers and approximately 50 volunteers, serving 34,000 residents over 6.6 square miles. We operate from one fire station, on Washington Road, with three engines, a truck, a heavy rescue vehicle, five squads and two staff vehicles. We respond to approximately 2,200 calls and participate in more than 1,000 hours of community service each year.
We have six areas of specialty: Administration, Operations & Safety, Training, Resource Management, Community Outreach and Marketing, and Fire Prevention & Life Safety Education. Our Fire Prevention & Life Safety Education division manages several significant community risk reduction initiatives including the fire and life safety education program in local schools, plans review, pre-planning, and comprehensive code enforcement and inspection activities.
Our municipality includes St. Clair Hospital (350+ beds), 11,958 single-family dwellings and duplexes, 197 apartment buildings, five nursing homes, nine assisted living facilities, 15 group homes, 15 schools, 16 churches, a regional mall, a Main Street business district, several strip shopping centers and numerous local commercial districts. The average fire flow for commercial occupancies is 1,907 gallons per minute and the average square footage is 21,753 square feet.
Seventy-five buildings (apartment and commercial) are taller than four stories, with 16 of those taller than seven stories. Critical infrastructure includes a mile-long Light Rail Transit (LRT) tunnel that begins in the community’s Main Street business district and carries approximately 22,000 passengers per day to and from the city of Pittsburgh. A notable characteristic of the community’s population is the high percentage of residents 65 years and older—20%, versus the national average of 12%.
