Private Fire Alarms

Many communities have an ordinance regarding annual residential fire and/or burglar alarm permit fees. The fees reduce costly false alarms and help us to maintain accurate response and contact information for the resident. The fees help offset the cost of computers in police cars and fire trucks and staff time to compile accurate owner information, including contact information for neighbors with access to a residence during an alarm.  

Ordinance: In accordance with the Mt. Lebanon Code, Section 502, Permits, it shall be unlawful for a property owner, lessee of property or a person otherwise occupying a premises within the Municipality to install an alarm system on the premises without first obtaining a permit from the municipality.  In order to obtain an Alarm System Operational Permit, an application for a permit and a fee of $35.00 must be submitted to the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department in accordance with the requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.  The purpose of this permit is to ensure that emergency responders have current contact, key holder, and building information. Download an Alarm System Operational Permit.

Key Boxes

The key box provides for non-destructive emergency access to the property or non-emergency access to the property with the property owner’s permission.  We notify property owners any time we access a key box. Master keys located in each fire apparatus are secured in a Master Key Retention System that requires individual authorization codes to access the master key.  Order a Knox Box.

Ordinance: Where access to or within a structure or an area is restricted because of secured openings or where immediate access is necessary for life-saving or fire-fighting purposes, the fire code requires a key box to be installed in an approved location.  The key box must be a Knox Box® 3200 Series and contain keys to gain access as required by the fire code official.
