Our Traffic Services unit oversees our crossing guard program.

Our crossing guard program budget includes a maximum of 32 trained crossing guards, complemented by substitutes and one supervisor. The cost is shared with the school district. These caring individuals are the first and last people to greet schoolchildren every school day. They also help at community events such as Final Friday, pictured above.

2026 Crossing Guard Re-alignment

Starting in August of 2025, a collaborative team of police leadership, school administration, school building leadership met to informally discuss travel patterns to school. That work had not been completed in about 20 years.

Throughout the 2025-26 school year, the police department and school district conducted assessments, counted students crossing, observed the number of car drop-offs and used mapping tools to note the distribution of the 39 guard posts throughout the community to reduce redundancy and provide the greatest safety benefit. The PTA was brought into the conversation before decisions were made.

As a result, some crossing locations have changed, including locations where very few students regularly crossed, or there were several options available for crossing the same street. This allows crossing guards to be positioned where they can have the greatest impact for the greatest number of students. Families may need to change their habits but students will be equally as safe using other routes.

No staff were cut; all guards whose posts were removed were offered other posts. Our guards operate under a negotiated union contract with mutually agreed upon work hours, pay scales and assignment to needed posts.

To be clear, the police department continues to maintain 32 posts throughout the community. To staff vacancies beyond that which can be covered by subs, the MLPD assigns officers to those locations. To operate at peak efficiency, we need a constant list of 32 regular guards working at least twice a day, and more than 10 substitutes.

At the same time, we have seen decreased interest in crossing guard positions, fewer applicants and 17 retirements in just the last two years. For several years, the police department, municipality and school district have escalated recruitment efforts, and we will continue to do so.
