The main elevator in the North Parking Garage needs to be repaired and modernized, and will be out of service starting March 13, 2023 and lasting for approximately six to eight weeks.
Here are some frequently asked questions about the project:
UPDATE: March 21, 2023:
The Municipality has heard from a number of concerned people with disabilities about parking access on the north end of town during the elevator repair project in the North Garage. We have heard you. As a result, we have opened the LOWER level of the parking garage in the BACK -- accessible ONLY from Parse Way -- for people with disability parking placards through the duration of the elevator project (an estimated 4 to 6 weeks remaining.) These spaces are first-come, first-served. The other options are still available as well, including a 15-minute parking space for drop-off and pickup only at 607 Washington Road. Please note: These spaces are NOT ADA accessible but they are served by an elevator that is in service and will take you to the first level of the parking garage so you may access Washington Road. Thank you for your patience.
What is being done?
The North Garage Elevator Car No. 1 that serves all levels of the parking garage will be taken out of service to address needed repairs as well as a modernization of the equipment, machine room and car. The other elevators are unaffected.
Why does this work need to be completed?
The project is needed to address weather-related deterioration of components to maintain safe operation of the elevator. The modernization of the car, machine room and hoist way will bring the car into compliance with current codes and reduce energy consumption.
Can’t you wait to do this until later since everyone is already dealing with sidewalk construction and on-street parking limitations due to the Vibrant Uptown project?
This work needs to be completed as soon as possible. This project is important for safety and function and should not be pushed to a future date as it is not a cosmetic update. Work on this project began in 2021, including ordering supplies that are subject to supply chain issues.
What date will the car be taken out of service and how long will the project take?
We are giving several weeks’ notice as we realize that businesses have appointments that have been scheduled months out, and they will need to coordinate with their patrons. The start date is March 13 and will last approximately six to eight weeks.
Where should businesses tell patrons with mobility concerns or strollers to park? Is there anything temporary that can be done?
Parking is available on Washington Road, in the Academy Lot and the South Garage (for businesses closer to the south end of the district.) The Municipality is providing a drop-off and pickup spot only at 607 Washington Road.
