Rabies vaccines being dropped in Mt. Lebanon

From July 31 through August 31, the United States Department of agriculture will be dropping rabies vaccines across Allegheny County, including in Mt. Lebanon, in the hopes of having it reach raccoons. The vaccines are in two forms: a plastic sachet and a fish meal block. Risk is minimal but avoid contact anyway. If you come across stray bait, use a gloved hand to toss it to an out of the way place like a ditch.

The biggest issue is usually off-leash dogs in parks. Parks are common raccoon habitats and must be baited. Make sure to keep your dog on a leash and keep him or her away from the bait.

Dogs would not be harmed by eating a few baits.
